Hi Truth! You are right, at one time Betsy had some pretty harsh comments directed toward parents considering surgery. I was one of those parents.

She only wrote, however, to prevent others from going through what she went through. I was very glad to have her opinion as one source of information. I'm not sure if she still is, but she was very active in an organization called "Bodies Lke Ours." They are/were a group of people born with "abnormal" genitals, who spoke out about a person's right to make choices for their own bodies rather than having their parents make those decisions for them when they are children. Being a young adult with CAH, you may find their forum interesting, and maybe even offer a different viewpoint.

My daughter did have surgery when she was an infant, for the reasons you have stated. She was misidentified as a boy at birth. We didn't know she had CAH until she had a near fatal crisis at 9 days old. I tend to believe if people are of capable mind, they can handle everything else. We had to weigh the physical versus mental consequences of her having surgery or not at an early age.

I'm very happy to hear you, despite the problems, are happy with the choice your parents made. If you feel it was the best for you, then it was. You sound like a very interesting and strong young woman. I wish you the best!

Megan,

Thanks for the video, it was interesting. What exactly is the problem with Truth being happy for  the way things are? It isn't like she could go back and change them even if she wanted to, so why question her contentment with her situation? I think it is a great thing that she can basically say, it isn't perfect, but it is better than it could have been. It is a great attitude.

God Bless,

Katrina

Katrina
