Natalie - I too was wondering about you - good to have you back. We've been through the wringer with my sister-in-law, who was schizophrenic to start out with and then got dementia on top of it as she got older. She'd been stable for years, then became very delusional, paranoid, and hostile/violent. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a great organization that offers a lot of support for families of persons with significant mental health issues - hope you've run into them already.
My stepson has serious bouts of depression; it was during one of his lengthy hospitalizations that we were introduced to NAMI. Wish we'd known about it when my sister-in-law was so sick.
