re: re: Allergy to Cortef???--to Christine and Anne Apr. 3rd, 2007 4:38pm
One way to recognize whether it is hives (which most likely would be an allergic reaction) is that the hives move around from day to day. If she has a rash that stays in one place for more than a day, then it is not hives. I don't know if too high a dose of steroids normally can cause a rash, but I do know that it can cause steroid acne, so it seems possible that it is just a side effect of too high a dose or maybe just adjusting to the higher dose. I would certainly ask the dr about it.
Anne, my daughter suffers from chronic hives, which are not related to steroid use, but I wonder if they are related to her hormonal imbalance. If you've read something about hives that may be relevant, I'd love to hear about it. By the way, hives and other allergic reactions are due to an overactive immune system, not lowered immunity, so steroids actually should help hives (do for my daughter), not cause them.
