Crazy lab test results!
Apr. 6th, 2007   2:00pm
Ok, I really don't know what to think about this new endo. To summarize, my daughter has a lot of symptoms of NCAH, but no diagnosis. Her stim test results, which I believe are questionable, put her in the carrier range. She also suffers from chronic hives daily, so I convinced her allergist to try her on a low dose of prednisone, which does help her hives. Then a new endo came to town, so the allergist really wants to not prescribe the pred anymore, to let the endo handle it. Well, the endo ordered a bunch of tests, having her go off of pred for 1 day before the blood work. The results, as he put it, don't make any sense.

I haven't seen them yet, but this is what he told us. Her cortisol level was high, higher than it went on the stim test. Her aldosterone and SHBG were also very high. Her 17 OHP was something like 170, so he says that she doesn't have NCAH. She also takes Yasmin, and that and the pred can interfere with all these tests. For example, Yasmin will raise SHBG levels. The high aldosterone really doesn't make sense. It should cause high blood pressure (hers is low). He is doing further testing to verify the high aldo.

My theory is that suddenly stopping the pred caused her body a lot of stress and caused the high cortisol and aldo levels. Don't know about the SHBG, unless the Yasmin is doing that. Anyone have any other ideas? I guess the only thing we can do is take her off Yasmin and pred and retest (although the endo doesn't think that is necessary because he thinks these results are valid). But what I'm wondering is this: does the fact that she produced high levels of cortisol and aldo prove that she doesn't have NCAH?

Kat
