re: treatment's for late onset CAH, dex versus hydrocortizone
Sep. 18th, 2007   11:15am
The reason for giving dex at night is to have it in your system before the usual 4 AM surge to suppress the overworking of the adrenal gland. Since dex stays in your system for over 24 hours usually, it probably works just as well to take it in the morning.

Hydro, on the other hand, only stays in your system for 6 to 8 hrs (rather, its half life is 6-8 hrs, so the amt of medicine is greatly reduced after that amt of time). Your dr should know that. That's why people take it 3-4 times a day. Theoretically, it does little good to take it at night because most of it will be out of your system by the 4 AM surge.

I don't have any personal experience with dex or hydro; I'm just reporting what I understand from what I've read. There should be some info on hydro at caresfoundation.org. It's what's usually given to treat children. You should be able to easily find something to show your dr about treating with hydro.
