Good luck at the NIH.

 YES, steroids are known throughout the healthcare field for causing depression, anxiety/mania, and even psychosis.

Also, please be aware that some psychiatric meds can have side-effects which mimic symptoms of autism/PDD/asperger's. If your son is on psych meds, they should be decreased or stopped before he is given a diagnosis that will change his whole life. Our child psychiatrist here insisted we do that with my son, and the difference was amazing...He does not have PDD--he had side-effects from an SSRI.
