re: Another way to test for LOCAH? Mar. 18th, 2008 9:09am
Hi Nova, as far as I know 17 ohp is the only way to test for 21 hydroxylase deficiency, which is by far the most common type of LOCAH. It would not hurt to check it again, as lab tests are not fool proof. Make sure it is checked around 8 AM during the first week of your cycle. For the other, rarer types of LOCAH, 11 deoxycortisol is tested for 11 hydroxylase deficiency, which is associated with high blood pressure. 17oh pregnenolone screens for 3 beta, which usually is associated with high DHEA. There are some rarer forms, but I'm not that familiar with them. Here is some info:
I've come across many women who have both PCOS and LOCAH, and feel that the LOCAH CAUSES their PCOS, rather than it being caused by insulin resistance. BTW, my daughter is in a similar position as you, in that she doesn't test positively for LOCAH (although her 17 ohp runs around 200), but doesn't fit the pattern for PCOS at all, either. I'm thinking of starting a new group for others in that situation; let me know if you're interested. Have you learned anything helpful to you from the PCOS boards?
