low potassium
Apr. 21st, 2008   9:34pm

Hi all. Well I have my results from some labs I was fortunate enought to have done. I was wondering how low under the ref range is low. Obviously one or two units is acceptable right? Mine was 3.3nmol/l thats about 2 units under the range of 3.5 to 5.1 nmol/L and marked off as low on the paper. But the doc said my labs looked normal. I asked for a copy anyway. Soooo, come to find out that low potassium can cause heart palpatations, fatigue...here's a small list.

  • Weakness, tiredness, or cramping in arm or leg muscles, sometimes severe enough to cause inability to move arms or legs due to weakness (much like a paralysis)   I have cramps in calves but not like charlie horses, but like hugs knots that throb and get inflamed.
  • Tingling or numbness I have bouts of this in my arms and hands.
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal cramping, bloating I have bloating
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat irregularly) This has been happening to me at night, especially on the evenings that I work out. But can happen even on the nights I don't do any exercise.
  • Passing large amounts of urine or feeling very thirsty most of the time  I have the blatter the size of a 5 month old, lol.
  • Abnormal psychological behavior: depression, psychosis, delirium, confusion, or hallucinations.       All of the above, lol. I'm joking. But I do get the confusion, and sometimes slight bouts of depression without crying. If that makes any sense.

Anyway this very nice but VERY young (looked 18 yrs old) Nurse practitioner said my labs looked fine but did not mention the low potassium, low anion gap (whatever that is (have to read on it) and my glucose was pretty good at 102mg/dl even though it says it was high.  My TSH was good but drawn in the afternoon. It was 2.53 uIU/ml.

Megan what you think? Anybody have any takes on this? I'm going to start taking a suppliment anyway. Anybody have any suggestions?
