re: what is adrenal crisis?
May. 1st, 2008   7:30pm

Jenny,

An adrenal crisis is caused by an insufficient amount of cortisol in the body.  The adrenal glands cannot produce adequate amounts to keep the body in proper working condition.  It is extremely life threatening and the patient in this state needs medical attention immediately or he/she will probably die.

http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000357.htm

Patients with LOCAH normally do not go into adrenal crisis, but those with full-blown CAH can if they forget to take their meds (Dex, florinef, etc.) or if they develop a serious infection or illness and neglect to increase their dosage.  There is a memorial website linked through one of the CAH sites which tells the story of a young man who died after going into an adrenal crisis.  Cortisol is super important!

Hope Suzanne
