Late Onset?
Jun. 26th, 2008   12:20pm

Im new to all this so bear with me.  I was diagnosed with PCOS over four years ago having had blood tests and a scan done to confirm this, at the time I was extremley overweight and had some excess hair (mild/moderate) mostly on my upper lip and abdomen (belly button down).  This had been present since I was around eleven.  Anyway I started taking Metformin and the weight dropped off me however the hair growth issue remained (I never had an issue with menstrul cycle).  Now I have been back and foward to the doctors in between and I always had high testosterone levels but they kept telling me it was a result of the PCOS as was the hair growth.  Since last November, the hair growth is excessive to the point I can pluck twice daily its sprouting up everywhere little clumps on my cheeks, all over my chin, back, chest, face and legs (way up to the top).  Also on top of that my privates are changing, growing larger as it was and I have lost an awful lot of weight and now my body is changing shape (loosing breast tissue etc).  I went to the doctors a month ago and they done some routine bloods which again showed extremley high testosterone and again I was told not to worry it was normal in PCOS.  Then a few days later I had a call from a doctor asking me to come in the following morning as a blood test that took a little longer to come back has shown up something they wanted to discuss further.  When I got in the doctor said he wasnt sure what the results meant but they think it may be an issue with my adrenal glands and it would need further testing and referal to an endochrinologist as he really had no idea what he was dealing with.  That was fine, I wasnt happy with his explanation so I went back to see a female doctor a week later.  She took a look at me and "down below" and said she thought I had adrenal hyperplasia, late onset.  She was asking me about childhood, puberty etc to which I informed her I was a very early developer having started my period at 9.  She called the endochrinologist and I am going there on Monday.

What troubles me is she had further blood tests done to help out the endochrinologist when I go there, full blood count, protien, kidney etc and all came back absolutley normal.  So I am quite confused, my symptoms certainly sound like CAH from what I have researched but the normal blood bit throws things up in the air for me a bit...Anyway any advice or support greatly welcomed.  Could this virilisation and extreme hirituism just be a result of PCOS?  Or does it sound like CAH - bearing in mind my early development.  also I should add, I am 4ft 11" I was very tall as a child then stopped growing as it were.  Along with this I have always had awful stretch marks on my arms (the tops), stomach back and my legs I started getting the stretch marks when I was 15 before I became overweight.  Not sure if that has any significance just something I thought I would add.  Sorry its so long winded.
