Hi Jennifer,First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! I have a 15 month old SWCAH daughter, and she is the light of our lives...hard to remember what we did in our 10 years of marriage before she was around!
You are SO lucky to have learned about this before birth. I had my daughter via C-section at our local hospital, and she was quickly taken to the NICU after birth because of ambiguous genitalia. We, since we had never heard of CAH, were petrified, of course. She was then flown down to the University of Michigan where she stayed for 4 days to get her meds figured out.
While we were there, we talked to many specialists, learned how to give emergency shots, etc...but no one really talked to us about how to best give the medication while breastfeeding. U of M was using an oral suspension (do NOT use this) and squirting it into her mouth, which is what we did when we were discharged. After seeing the Dr. who is now our regular endo, we switched to the cortef tablets, which I dissolve in a little water in an oral syringe.
I was pumping my milk at the time so I could add the salt to the bottle, which seemed to be the only way to get it in her. By the time I found this board and read that I could give it to her while breastfeeding her (put in oral syringe and SLOWLY dispense into the corner of the mouth while feeding), she wasn't interested in the breast and only wanted the bottle. I still pumped for a year...but whew...what a lot of work!
I'd be happy to give you tips if you'd like to talk by phone...much easier than writing it all down. If you'd like my number, please e-mail me offboard at alaskarocks@gmail.com and I'd be glad to help!
:-)
