Ginny's at the ER
Jan. 28th, 2008   12:25pm

Ginny started throwing up around 9am. I gave her a triple dose of cortef, but she threw it up. I call the doctor, but as I was going through the "push 1 if..." nonsense I went to get the phenergan, and saw that it was 2 years out of date (it's been a while since either she or Jonthan has needed it). The doctor called in a prescription, but since Linda was at work and would take 30 to 45 minutes to get home, he okayed giving her the shot. It didn't do a thing. The trouble was there's only been once that the shot had no effect, and in that case the vomiting was accompanied by severe lethargy. This time there was vomiting, every half hour, but not really any lethargy. She acted like she felt fine, then would throw up.

Then I remembered the doctor once warning about letting the cortef get too cold. He said there was delivery truck that got stalled and the driver let it sit too long in the cold and the medicine he was delivering was still delivered. A girl with CAH got cortef that had gotten too cold and it was no good. Our doctor told us that by the time they got her to the ER she'd suffered permanent brain damage.

During the ice storm last month we lost electricty and heat. While we were able to keep the house warm enough for coats and blankets, during the night it would get down to around 50 or below, inside. Apparently that may have been enough to make the solu-cortef we had go bad.

The doctor called in another prescription but still wanted Ginny at the ER just to make sure since she went so long without any medicine while sick. I know how quickly a CAH child can go from mild adrenal crisis to severe adrenal crisis, so obviously I'm worried.
