Christy I am sorry that you have not had a positive experience with your surgery. I understand you want to urge parents to be aware. But please understand that there is a huge difference between when you got surgery and now. Doctors who know what they are doing would NEVER dream of cutting the clitoris off. That isn't done anymore. Parents should definently look into each doctor and make sure they are experienced in what they are doing.
I chose to have my daughter undergo surgery. I spent many nights on the computer looking at doctors. I called their offices and spoke with their staff. I was very through in my research. My daughter was very virilized(sp?) so I wanted the best. Could I have waited until she could make the decision on her own........... sure but with her something would have had to been done before she started to mensturate. I am confident in the Doctor that took care of her and the best I can do is what I believe to be right for her. Does that mean that I think that parents that decide to wait are wrong ...............no. Everyone is different.
When parents recieve the news of thier child it is very difficult. There is so much information to digest that it can make your head spin. I would not tell parents what to do but implore them to educate themselves. If someone wants to know about surgeries then make calls. I talked with Trina at Dr. Rink's office many times before I made any decision. She would talk to me for 45 minutes at a time. I also spoke with Dr. Poppas's office for lengty periods. I called CARES many times as well and spoke with Mirabel, ERin and Kelly. No one at any time told me not to do something or pushed me to do anything. They told me it was a choice. And one that I made with as much knowlege as I could find.
