Survey...When do you have lab work done and do you fast before hand?
Mar. 5th, 2008   5:54pm

I asked this before on this board and since we have some new people come and go I would like to ask again.

1. What time of the day do you have your blood work or your child's blood work drawn?

2. Do you fast before hand?

3. Do you NOT take medication in the morning or keep your regular medicine schedule during the day you have the blood drawn?

I will answer mine.

1. We have had our daughter that has SWCAH drawn at the same time since she was born. (she is ten) Always like an hour after she wakes up. So we have kept it in the 11:00 a.m. range. Just so I have something constant to go by. Wouldn't your body "read" something different at different times of the day?

2. We do not have her fast before hand.

3. She takes her regular 5:30 am dose of Cortef and then her regular dose of Florinef when she wakes up. So if it is a morning of blood work, that means she had a dose of Florinef one hour before her draw.

I ask this because it baffles me that so many here have followed different regiments when it comes to blood draws. I do know for a fact if the child is sick, or getting sick, or was crying and stressed out during the blood draw,  the OHP levels will show an elevation.  BUT I believe the endo. could realize that if all other levels are in the normal range. Has anyone else been told that? I am curious to what everyone else does to prepare for blood draws and what their endos. ask them to do before the draw. I often wonder if I am getting a true reading for my daughter or not. I know blood work is just "snap shots" sorta say of what the body is really doing. And the 24 hour urine is more acurate some say. And if anyone has gone to NIH what they do to prepare for blood work. What are their "rules". Thanks everybody.

Laura
