re: WILL SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS WHOLE BONE THING BOUT TO GO CRAZY!!!! Mar. 12th, 2008 3:33am
I think what your endo means he wants to do a bone age, which is a simple x-ray of the hand and wrist. The doctors look at the shape and size of the bones and they work out what they call the 'bone age'. They then compare the bone age to the chronological age (actual age) and use this to help them ensure they have the dosage right. If on too much hydrocortisone then the bone age is delayed which means the bone age will be younger than the actual age and you are being over-treated. If on too little medication then the bone age will be advanced, which means under-treatment. This x-ray is usually done once a year but only once the child is about two years old. Have you a copy of the book, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia A Parents' Guide by C Hsu and Scott Rivkees? as it is all explained in the book.
It is natural to worry, shows you are a good and caring mother. You need to ask your endo to give you more training on giving an injection so you feel comfortable doing it but if you feel you cannot, which is also understandable, then you could contact your local emergency services to work out a protocol with them.
Try not to worry and enjoy your children, they soon grow up and NEVER be afraid to ask your doctors questions, remember that is what they are there for and although we may think the questions silly, they wont and they might turn out to be very important.
