I experience migrains almost monthly. I had to go to a headache specialist because I learned that headaches and migrains are completely different and caused by different factors. Migrains can be treated with over the counter meds, but typically only minimize the pain and suffering rather than eliminating it. I have found that the most effective method for me is a prescription drug called Imitrex, paired with Zofran for nausea, related to the migrains. There are lots of prescription drugs available for migrains and I have never experienced any issues or side effects from the use of these drugs. My headache specialist did do a drug cross-check with my current meds, Cortef and Florinef, and Imitrex, along with several other migrain meds I have tried, have no interactions.
