re: planning to be a parent again Mar. 26th, 2008 6:29am
Hello!
First of all congratulations on the pregnancy! I have a 2,5 year old SWCAH son and am now pregnant of a girl (and due today!). The first thing you need to decided is wether or not you want the dex treatment (so hopefulluly, if it's a CAH girl she will not or less be virilized), wich is best to start at 6 weeks. If you don't want that, no extra test are needed and the child will be checked for CAH after birth. I took dex and had no side effects, well some weight gain but that was it. I had a blood test (so my blood was drown) a 7 weeks to determine the sex of the fetus. At 8 weeks we knew we were having a girl and I had to continu the dex. Later on a amnio or CVS needs to be done to do genetic testing and see if she has CAH and the dex needs to be continued. The things is that in case of a boy you can stop the dex and have him tested after birth (in that case there is no need for an amnio or CVS, wich both have the small risc of a miscarrage 0,5-1%). Strange thing is that is never read any thing about this 'sex test'' on this board. I live in the Netherlands and it's done here (ofcourse only in case like this where the is a medical important). I guess it's done in the states as well.
