This is a great CAH site. I wish I would have found this years ago. I am looking for other CAH male adults over the age of 40 to share in the different aspects of CAH in males. I would also be willing to share my life experiences with CAH with others that maybe interested. I am a 48 year old male with CAH. Diagnosed at age 11 days old with a partial 21-hydroxylase deficient and a salt loser. In my youth, my bone age was averaging three years advanced and I reached puberty at age 9. I stopped growing at age 14. At age 35, after 5 years of marriage and no success in getting my wife pregnant, I was diagnosed as being sterile. My endo of today believes I was not properly given corrective dosages of hydrocortisone to possibly curtail adult sterility. I was on 10MG hydrocortisone or cortef once a day from infant to age 39. Changed to prednisone at age 39 and at age 46 we hit the correct dosage of 5MG of prednisone twice a day. In 2006 my lab work showed hormone levels were out of whack and this is when we started the 5MG of prednisone twice a day. Now I am 48 and my recent lab work shows the hormone levels are off again. My endo wants to switch to dexamethasone. I have a really good Endocrinologist that takes a real interest in my condition. This is real important to have and I see my endo every two years. I have had for the first time in my life a weight problem at age 41+ (first year of prednisone) but could lose it with no problem. At age 47 I gained a good 15 pounds and have not had any luck losing it. My low activity level can contribute to this too, however my eating habits have remained the same. After reading some of the statements of the members on this site that have switched to dexamethasone, I am concerned with the weight gain aspect. I have joint pain in my ankles, feet, knees and hands. My back has always been a problem since age 11, mostly from a football injury. I have really thought that the steroid intake has had an influence but my endo argues against it since I am taking a replacement dosage. Generally speaking, my adult health has been very good. That makes up for all of the hospital trips from day 11 to 8 years old. For those of you that indulge in alcohol, be careful. I did have a drinking problem in my 20's-30 but stopped the hard liquor at 35. When I started on the prednisone I could not over indulge and not really pay for it. I now drink up to 3 ales with dinner/occasions and plenty of water to follow. My name is Mike and I really look forward to learning from others and hopefully some can learn from my experiences with CAH.
If you are interested in reaching me directly, I will provide you with my e-mail address.
