Hi Tonya! I remember this being discussed on the board before, so hopefully there are people who will be able to help you.

I am a public educator and would caution against a 504, unless you feel your child's medical needs are not being met at school. The reason I say this, we are finding a great deal of research showing college discrimination against students with any type of special accommodations. (By "any" I mean mental, emotional and physical)

I'm not saying this always happens, and I am also sure it is illegal. However, we have found enough evidence of ALL disabilities being considered a "liability" to college acceptance boards that we are attempting to handle special accommodations as a school corporation instead of going through the state. We just feel it is a better way to serve our students when possible.

Again, this is just one side of it, and something to consider. I'm sure you will get other view points.

God Bless and GOOD LUCK,

Katrina
