CARES NEWSLETTER AND PUMP ARTICLE
May. 29th, 2008   10:26am
I would like to point out that in the latest CARES Newsletter there is an article about me using the pump for the control of my CAH. http://www.caresfoundation.org/productcart/pc/news_letter/Newsletter-PDF/Spring_08.pdf
Page 7. This was not the original article which was sent to them, it was edited, (re-written) by someone who knows nothing about me and we were not told or asked to check it. They have apologised but unfortunately it was too late to change the edited article. Professor Hindmarsh wrote the orginal and then asked me to write parts on how I felt, this can be read using the following link:

I'd really like to explain that it is not a continuous injection but a continuous infusion through a fine plastic cannula or very small metal cannula which is left in the skin, it is nothing like the needle of an injection, or anywhere as big as the ones used for IV drips etc.  I am only writing this because I do not want anyone who reads the article to be put off trying the pump. I do not like injections and even avoid injections such as the flu jab, so the use of the word concerns me! I now use the small metal cannula, which I honestly don't feel, it is extremely fine and small. These are used on babies and toddlers, and really no big deal.  I find being on the pump and only having to change these cannula's every 3 - 4 days easier than remembering to take tablets at certain times. My control is now perfect as the dose is worked out for me, perfectly to mimic the circadian rhythm so there are no side-effects from being on too much or too little hydrocortisone. Not only has it improved my health incredibly, it has given me extra growth that was not thought possible and for the first time in my life, I don't have a problem with weight gain.

I read a recent study done on the pump in the USA and they did not use Professor Hindmarsh's method so their results are not as good as mine. I have been using the pump for 4 years now and never felt better and have had perfect control since I first started on it. So for anyone who wants to try this, please do not be put off by the thought of continuous injections, as it is not like that, or a big needle being left in you! If you are having problems with poor control or major weight issues, etc and would be interested in using this method, the best person to get the information on the way to use it is from Professor Hindmarsh, who is at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England.

Chris
