re: re: Ear Piercing

Dear Gail,

How are you doing?

I've always loved your name.

I don't have the right answers but only an opinion. I don't think that this ia unreasonable question to ask a CAH message board or your kids Endo or Ped Doctor. .

It is your kid... a one year old and I assume then you will handle the possible outcomes of this procedure even if  the outcome is negative.

I got my ears pierced at eight years old trying to fit in and that never worked. I have simple virilizing CAH. Like everyone else, I and my Mom took good care of the site where the earrings went in but other people that took just as good or even better care of their ears did end up with infections at their piercing site and nobody really knew why that happened - maybe it was a reaction ...who knows but all that trouble for female fashion.

A stress dose when the stud goes in? I really don't know if that is needed or not but ya got to be ready for the worse case outcome if your one year old with CAH gets and infection from the piercing.

Growing up, I've seen infections from earrings and I've had small ones myself even years after. I hope this post is coming out to give you something to think about and it isn't meant to be negative or bashing.

We do have a condition that sometimes it is needed to take into consideration the whole picture. I wanted to drink Kava Kava ( a drink from the kava root in Figi)  myself which does have a slight risk to it and that is for people that don't have any medical conditions and my General practitioner flipped out that I called and wanted to know if it was ok to drink this stuff. I take other medications and this other doctors replied that my immune system was sorta normal.

For me and you post here where you asked for opinions (smile) it isn't the act of getting this done which may or may not need a stress dose. Don't little kids run into tables and the like when they are trying to walk but the turn out fine? I've been told to give myself a stress dose before Doctor visits - so a stress dose for a procedure isn't an out of the ordinary question but are you going to be able to handle the chance that the site may have a reaction to the earrings and know you one year old with CAH needs a stress doses to deal with an infection from getting earrings.

Also, freaking earrings drove me nuts to sleep in and the fact that one had to keep them in and twist them around to keep forming the hole wasn't the greatest thing as an eight year old  and I just cring thinking about a one year old dealing with this besides all the rest we are forced to endure but that is just me.

Best of luck

Aimee
