re: re: re: Upcoming knee surgery for 15 yo grandson Jul. 31st, 2008 8:43pm
My 19 (almost 20) yr old daughter has had numerous surgeries - 3 knee and 4 hip, not to mention tonsils/adenoids many years ago. She currently takes Cortef and Florinef for her SWCAH. What we have always done is to give her a shot of Solu-Cortef at home right before we leave for the hospital. Once there, they prep her and get her IV in. The surgeon always has the dr's orders for additional Solu-Cortef either during surgery or immediately post-op. I think it depends on how much time it has been since her shot at home, how long the surgery will take, etc. When I give the shot at home, she gets the full vial, intramuscular, in the arm. We continue for a day on so on a higher dose and then within 2-3 days, we have her back on her normal dose of meds.
Good luck to your son with the ACL repair. My son (non-CAH) tore his when he was either 12 or 13 and had reconstruction. Because he was not finished growing, they took some of his hamstring and created a new ligament for him (using patella would have compromised his growth plate.) It has worked well for him. He is now 30 and his ACL is probably a little small for his adult body size, but it has not given him any trouble at all. How are they doing your son's?
