Hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone for the WHO Essential Medicines List
Aug. 1st, 2008   9:25am

Dear Friends,

This is a long-awaited and very exciting moment in time.

Hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone are now being considered by the WHO for inclusion in the WHO Essential Medicine List for Children. Inclusion of these drugs in the children's list would mean automatic inclusion in the WHO Essential Medicine List for adults. Inclusion of hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone in the WHO Essential Medicine List is our BEST hope for helping the thousands of children and adults living with CAH in resource-poor countries around the world. Affordable access to medication is the biggest challenge for people living with CAH in these countries: the price of hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone on the black market is always extremely high; quality is variable, and access uncertain.

The WHO meets in September to decide which applications will be successful. They will consider all public comments, including letters of support for the applications.

The application for hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone can be found at:

http://www.who.int/selection_medicines/committees/subcommittee/2/hormones/en/index.html

General information about the upcoming Second Meeting of the Subcommittee of the Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines can be found at:

http://www.who.int/selection_medicines/committees/subcommittee/2/en/index.html

All of the applications to the second sub-committee on children's medicines (2008) are found at:

http://www.who.int/selection_medicines/committees/subcommittee/2/applications/en/index.html

Comments and letters of support can be sent to emlsecretariat@who.intAll comments will be posted on the WHO web-site.

Thank-you so much to everyone who has been involved in the process of applying to have hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone included in the WHO Essential Medicine List so far. This is a wonderful opportunity to speak out for those who are unable to do so for themselves – but also raise the profile of CAH generally. It is a unique opportunity to come together as an international CAH community.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr Kate Armstrong
