I am a special ed teacher and have a close friend who is our autism specialist. She has extensive training and is constantly going to conferences to learn more. She told me that the link with the vaccinations is not conclusive yet, but their recent studies are showing a link to exposure to mercury. Mercury was in the vaccinations and therefore it may have been causing some children to get autism. There is not one single cause for autism but rather many different possible etiologies. There is a genetic component but this alone will not cause it. Anyways, there are mercury free vacinations. You should simply check with your pediatrician to make sure their vaccinations are mercury free. When I asked our ped she said they only did mercury free ones now and concurred with the information my autism specialist friend had told me. A specific cause for autism has not been found, but they are certainly learning more about this complex disorder.
The rationale behind spacing the vaccinations I would assume would also space the amount of mercury in their system, however with mercury free vaccinations I think you could go ahead. We did with our daughter.
