Rough summer for my daughter .... need some prayers (a bit long) Aug. 18th, 2008 10:23am
My SW daughter has had a rough summer: she's normally quite healthy, but the last few summers has had trouble with a dramatic skin reaction to something .... (we're not sure what yet). Her hands, face, feet, and sometime body, swell up and become bright red and swollen looking. Sometimes there's an "oozing", and usually the skin peels off afterward. Last summer, this reaction (which we assumed was an allergy) was so severe, it sent her into a crisis for the first time in over 6 yrs.
Last winter we saw an allergist who diagnosed severe contact dermatitis, and gave her some massive doses of prednisone to take when it happened again (since we're not sure what's causing it). Standard allergy tests all came back negative, and evidently antihistamine is not what is needed for this.
Well, this summer it happened again. We started on the prednisone right away and that seemed to clear it up rather quickly! Unfortunately, it kept happening, so she spent much of her summer on prednisone and (at the advice of her endo) doubled or tripled as well.
She was finally feeling better, off the extra meds, and then last week a stomach bug hit (it's going ALL around our little town!), and a sinus cold ..... back on double meds again. She also developed a bladder infection (3rd one she's had in about a year and a half) which we treated with antibiotics. When I took her back for a check-up yesterday, the infection had not cleared up - still some blood in the urine and a slight fever - so we're going for more tests today to "get to the bottom of this" (as our GP put it). We're supposed to be celebrating her 11th birthday party in the afternoon, with mini-golf, giggling girls and bumper boats!
I'm concerned that something is seriously wrong - maybe CAH related? I took dex while pregnant with her, and we had her urinary tract checked out when she was born and again when she was 3, but not since. Perhaps there IS some problem there ....??? I really struggle with not freaking out when she's sick (we lost our 2 yr old son to a crisis, so I'm easily freaked!). I'm trying to commit her to God's care, but I'm tired (we just finished a very busy VBS week at our church!) and weepy and selfish, and I just want her to be well, and to stay here with us.
