re: Pregnant....Amnio Question Aug. 20th, 2008 2:30pm
I took dex, too, through my pregnancy with my (now) 11 yr old SW daughter. I did have the amnio and realize that there is a small risk associated with it (although not as high as a CVS).
My question is this: would you continue to take the dex if you found out your baby is a girl? (how are they planning to determine the sex of your baby WITHOUT an amnio? - ultrasound alone is not very reliable, and I certainly wouldn't base my decision to stop/continue the dex based on that). If you do decide to keep taking the dex because the baby is thought to be a girl, and you discover at birth that she does NOT have CAH, you've subjected her to 5 months of unnecessary dex treatment (which can compromise her immune system among other things; there is a very recent study on the CARES website that highlights some of the possible side effects for the children whose moms took dex, and the babies ended up not having CAH - i don't believe there was anything life threatening, but there were some things like ADHD, difficulty concentrating ... that sort of thing).
In my opinion (only!), if you are committed to taking the dex through this pregnancy as far as you need to, the next step is an amnio ..... otherwise you may be doing your baby (and yourself) more harm than good.
