Cortisol is the hormone produced in the body. Cortisone is the synthetic (human made) version of cortisol. Maybe your doctor is referring to different manufacturers of the medicine. My daughter takes the 5mg Cortef (brand name) of hydrocortisone (cortisone for short.) Julia
