re: brand name cortef vs generic--- advanced bone age Sep. 16th, 2008 11:23am
We did have trouble with the generic, although my daughter's doctor doubted that was the cause at first. She had been on cortef for 10 years when she was switched to the generic. I noticed slight differences in her coloring and energy level. I brought these concerns to her endo, and she didn't think the meds would be the cause. We did the bloodwork and her labs were off for the first time ever. The doctor switched her back to cortef and three months later her labs were normal again. Our doctor thought this to be a "fluke," and still prescribes the generic to other patients. I refuse it for my daughter. My daughter doesn't have advanced bone age, but I wouldn't panic. It is never too late for anything. Just make sure to keep asking questions, and hang in there.
Sidenote: I wondered about the size of the generic. If your son needs a half pill, the generic is smaller and seems much softer than cortef. I was having trouble splitting it to make sure she had a full dose. I thought it was possible she wasn't getting enough.
