Chart to show disease-incubation period-contagion period-of some common viruses
Sep. 18th, 2008   9:01am

I got this out of a Better Homes and Gardens book from Feb. 2006 and thought I would share it with you guys. I know most of us wonder when we hear someone is sick if our child is safe to play with them yet. The rule of thumb this doctor says is that once a child's fever has been gone for 12 hours or he's been on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours, he is probably not contagious BUT it really depends on what specific germ they are talking about. This is from Dr. Susan Coffin from the Infection Prevention and Control at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Disease                   incubation period            contagion period

Bronchiolitis                      4-6 days              onset of cough until 7 days

Chicken pox                      10-21 days           1 day before lesions appear on skin until all

                                                                       until all sores are crusted.

Colds                                 1-5 days                onset of runny nose until fever is gone.

Croup                                2-7 days                onset of cough until fever is gone

Fifth Disease                     4-14 days              7 days

Pinkeye                             1-3 days                onset of pus until 24 hrs. on antibiotic eye

                                                                         antibiotic eye drops.

Rotavirus                           1-3 days                  7 days after the onset of diarrhea

Sore throat, viral.               2-5 days                  onset of sore throat until fever is gone.

Strep Throat                        2-5 days                 24 hours after start of antibiotic. If they

                                                                           don't  take an antibiotic, they're

contagious for 2 to 3 weeks after the onset

                                                                            of a sore throat.

Whooping Cough                  7-14 days              Up to 5 days after the start of antibiotics

Vomitting (viral)                   2-5 days                  Until vomiting stops.
