Cristi and Sally,
My daughter (11) was switched from cortef to the generic for a brief time period. We weren't told there was an issue getting Cortef, rather our insurance wouldn't cover the name brand since there was a generic available.
My daughter had always been well controlled on Cortef, but started to feel bad after being switched to the generic. Always tired, etc. Her endo didn't believe it had anything to do with the generic drug, but I knew that was the only variable that had changed. I demanded a blood test, and her levels were off. Her endo wrote the script without the possiblity of substituting the generic. Insurance then paid for it.
I also didn't like the size of the pills. They are closer to the size of her florinef, and as a preteen she is beginning to take more responsibility for her meds. I was concerned she would mistake one for the other. Also, because they are smaller and softer than Cortef, I noticed they didn't cut as cleanly.
Everyone is different. Many people report success on the generic drug. I wouldn't refuse to switch, although I would monitor your child's progress. Also, if you have a child that has always been on the generic, and has done well, I wouldn't worry about the differences.
God Bless,
Katrina
