We have always used a 22 or 23 ga needle that is anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2" long. We inject into the back of the arm (Grab the back of the arm and squeeze. Inject into the muscle that you have grabbed. The medicine must go into the muscle.) Of course, I never had to do this in an infant. I would imagine you would use a shorter needle on an infant.
