Getting in the salt was the worst part for me. Our daughter (now 2 years old) would get so upset and gag. After much trial and error we came up with a way of mixing it that she would take. We changed over to a prescription for sodium chloride (salt water) which was easier. We would use a one-to-one ratio of sodium chloride and breastmilk and 1/8 of a teaspoon of sugar for each ml of sodium chloride. Ex) when she was on 5ml/day, I would mix a little cup each AM of 5ml of sodium chloride, 5ml of milk and 5/8 teaspoon of sugar, which came out to about 12ml of solution for the day. Then I would give her about 4 ml -3x each day. We had a pacifier from the hospital that had a hole in the middle (you could see in her mouth when she sucked) and a ring on the outside that sat out flat rather than against her skin. We would put the syringe of solution in the side of her mouth while she sucked the pacifier. If she'd have a hard time with taking it I'd wait until she was just falling asleep and give it to her in the side of her pacifier. The doctor said that swallowing is a natural response and so this would be fine. After all of that I will tell you that things get much better quite quickly. You'll find a way that works for your child to take the medicine and soon it will be just a part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth.
